Jack & Jill of America, Inc. was founded January 24, 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from a meeting of 20 mothers with the idea of bringing together children in a social and cultural environment. In 1964, as more groups became active, bylaws were drawn up and incorporated under the laws of Delaware. Jack & Jill celebrated its 50th Golden Anniversary in January 1988. The organization continues on, dedicating its resources to improving the quality of life, particularly for African-American children.

The goals, found primarily in the objectives of Jack & Jill of America, Inc. serve as our constant guides. They are as follows:

To create a medium of contact for children which will stimulate their growth and development;
To provide constructive educational, cultural, civic, recreational, social and service programs for children;
To aid mothers in learning more about their children by careful study;
To seek for ALL children the same advantages we desire for our own; and,
To support all national legislation aimed at bettering conditions for all children.

The Birmingham Chapter of Jack and Jill was awarded the Violet D. Greer Award for its grant entitled, "A Teen's Guide to Dollars and Sense."

One study indicates that the number of bankruptcies filed among people 25 years of age and younger rose 50% in the past year alone. The goal of the Dollars and Sense program is to offset these alarming statistics by providing teens with the necessary tools to become financially confident and self-reliant individuals. Its purpose is to develop sound spending habits today so that tomorrow's leaders can manage their community's or nation's finances as responsibly as their own.

Teens of the Birmingham Community, as well as teens of Jack and Jill, actively participate in this monthly financial seminar for two hours. The grant began in September and will culminate in May.

Birmingham is especially proud because Ava Washington, Chairperson of Foundation, honored the chapter by saying, "This year awardees represent an organization that hold their community close and dear to their hearts... close enough to see their youth as tomorrow's leaders and dear enough to find solutions to the problems plaguing their young people."

In addition to the above program, the Birmingham chapter of Jack and Jill Inc. is involved in issues such as seat belt safety, violence in the media and arts and cultural enrichment for economically disadvantaged and minority children.
