The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham is dedicated to improving the status and quality of life for women and girls in the greater Birmingham area through purposeful philanthropy and the establishment of a permanent endowment. The Fund is committed to providing a vehicle for women to assume greater roles as philanthropists and supporting critical programs for women and girls through community-initiated and board-initiated grants.
The Women’s Fund, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, is a permanent endowment of The Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. As the endowment grows, so does our ability to increase the number and amount of grants we give. As a part of The Community Foundation, The Women’s Fund benefits from economies of scale as monies are pooled for investment purposes and professionally managed by The Community Foundation. Contributions to The Women’s Fund go toward increasing the endowment, and grants are disseminated from interest income generated by endowment investments. Our legacy is protected and perpetual.
The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham joins a growing women’s philanthropy movement. There are currently around 90 women’s funds internationally; many are less than 10 years old. Since 1985, women’s funds have raised well over $100 million and have provided grant funding for projects ranging from career exploration for low-income pre-teen girls to domestic violence prevention programs to women’s health education initiatives to financial management seminars for women. These are “new dollars,” not money diverted from funds now going to other women’s organizations. |
