Oasis, A Women's Counseling Center was founded in 1995 by Anne Bruno LaRussa as an outgrowth of her graduate work in counseling at UAB. Supported by a diverse group of women as organizing board members and guided by a needs assessment of mental health service providers in the Birmingham area, the vision was to build a women's counseling and education center, utilizing two neighboring houses on 14th Avenue and 19th Street in Birmingham's Southside.

The mission of Oasis is to provide women and their families with educational and therapeutic health services in a peaceful and safe environment. We support women who are motivated to learn, to grow, and to make positive changes. Our core counseling mission is designed for women who are encountering obstacles in their lives either because of challenging circumstances or normal life transitions. Our groups and classes offer women a chance to work together around common issues or interests with skilled and talented mentors and teachers. And by no means least, we offer the opportunity to everyone - men as well as women and young people - to serve as a board member, volunteer and contributor.
